Anne Hathaway plays Mia Thermopolis in the 2001 film 'The Princess Diaries'. Mia is an intelligent character and has a rather studious appearance, much like many other characters that appear in romantic comedies. The principle character usually finds themselves faced with a dilemma; their appearance, and in order to be noticed by their love interest they need to make drastic changes to themselves. For example some films that feature this 'Cinderella scenario' are:

Grease Lightning

Olivia Newton John: Sandy Olsson

Devil wears prada

Anne Hathaway : Andrea Sachs

St. Trinian's

Talulah Riley : Annabelle Fritton

St. Trinian's is not a Romantic Comedy however, a makeover does help her to be accepted by her peers.

In my film opening i have attempted to make my character look studious much like the stereotypical principle characters found in many romantic comedies. The glasses I have used are representative to her intellectual characteristics and tying her hair back creates an unkempt look. The untidiness and studious attributes combine to suggest the unpopular cliche: The nerd. This straight away alerts the audience that this characters aim in the plot is to be accepted by her peers or a love interest. It is typical that the unpopular girl/boy takes the lead role in a romantic comedy and they let the audience into their thoughts so that they experience similar emotions to the character.

Filming log

Day 1: Today i filmed the first part of our film opening which took place at my house. Originally i was going to attempt to film more of the script but due to extreme wind and dark clouds i felt it was too dull to film the outside parts however i still managed to film the first part of my opening. I found that it was quite difficult to film with the awkward lighting however i had friend stand in for me to hold a lamp positioned towards the character creating a much lighter scene. I feel that the recording quality of the camera wasn't too good hence the reason i had to stop filming the rest of my scipt, all you could hear was loud satic from the wind. This week i will be editing the first section of my film and filming the rest. hopefully ready to be edited by the end of this week if not then early next week.

Music

For the opening scene of our movie we wanted music to bring an upbeat and playful mood to the scene, originally we wanted to use the backing track to 'Express Yourself' By Labrinth but due to the fact we are not allowed any copy righted music we resorted to a free online database of copyright free music...http://freeplaymusic.com/ We wanted to find something that was lighthearted and joyful and after searching for what seemed like hours we finally found our track.

This track is upbeat and i can imagine it fitting perfectly in with our film. It has an up beat feel which can be related to the young romatic genre of film. It contains drums and electric guitar which can be related to the young feeling rock bands that use these instruments in their music.

The track is called, " Hot Tamale (2:28) and was written and all credit goes to...
Composed by:Scott P. Schreer, BMI (50%), Pete Calandra, BMI (50%)
Published by: Freeplaymusic, BMI (50%), Pecamusic, BMI (50%)

I will refer to these people in the opening titles.

Re-Planning

Due to our group taking separate paths, the planning of the filming has to be re-evaluated. Instead of the original actors I will need to replace some of our characters, and i will need to re-film some sections that we have already filmed because the main character was one of our group members. Over the next week i need to film all four scenes and be ready to edit in order to meet our deadline and I also need to find music to go with our film.
