Filming log

Day 1: Today i filmed the first part of our film opening which took place at my house. Originally i was going to attempt to film more of the script but due to extreme wind and dark clouds i felt it was too dull to film the outside parts however i still managed to film the first part of my opening. I found that it was quite difficult to film with the awkward lighting however i had friend stand in for me to hold a lamp positioned towards the character creating a much lighter scene. I feel that the recording quality of the camera wasn't too good hence the reason i had to stop filming the rest of my scipt, all you could hear was loud satic from the wind. This week i will be editing the first section of my film and filming the rest. hopefully ready to be edited by the end of this week if not then early next week.

Music

For the opening scene of our movie we wanted music to bring an upbeat and playful mood to the scene, originally we wanted to use the backing track to 'Express Yourself' By Labrinth but due to the fact we are not allowed any copy righted music we resorted to a free online database of copyright free music...http://freeplaymusic.com/ We wanted to find something that was lighthearted and joyful and after searching for what seemed like hours we finally found our track.

This track is upbeat and i can imagine it fitting perfectly in with our film. It has an up beat feel which can be related to the young romatic genre of film. It contains drums and electric guitar which can be related to the young feeling rock bands that use these instruments in their music.

The track is called, " Hot Tamale (2:28) and was written and all credit goes to...
Composed by:Scott P. Schreer, BMI (50%), Pete Calandra, BMI (50%)
Published by: Freeplaymusic, BMI (50%), Pecamusic, BMI (50%)

I will refer to these people in the opening titles.

Re-Planning

Due to our group taking separate paths, the planning of the filming has to be re-evaluated. Instead of the original actors I will need to replace some of our characters, and i will need to re-film some sections that we have already filmed because the main character was one of our group members. Over the next week i need to film all four scenes and be ready to edit in order to meet our deadline and I also need to find music to go with our film.

Camera angles

Extreme long shots: An extreme long shot is used to clarify time and location.

Long shot: Shows the character in their environment.

Mid shot: Shows the character waist up so the viewer can get familiar with them.

Two shot: A shot of two characters expressing their relationship with each other.

Close up: A close up is of the character or object usually of the face to show emotion or of an object with sentimental value.

Extreme Close up: A shot that usually concentrates on the character and involves the eyes. It’s used to show overwhelming emotion.

Camera Movements

Tracking Shot: Movement of the shot back and forth.

Tilt Shot: Movement of the camera up and down to show the importance and/or status of the character.

Zoom: Zoom is another technique that could be used instead of tracking.

Arc Shot: Movement around the characters.

Panning Shot: Movement of shot using the tripod, central rotation.

Character representation

In our film opening we want to give the impression of stereotypical characters within a romantic comedy, therefore we have included certain items within the characters costumes to represent certain characteristics.

Some items that we have used include:

Glasses :- A few of our charaters wear glasses in our movie opening in order to give the impression of a 'nerdy' personality. By stating that this character is 'nerdy' the audience stereotypically sees them as a relatively unpopular person due to modern day social groups, we use the glasses to show that our film is based on a unpolpular cliche of people. However, we also use glasses in our film opening to show the importence and the authority of the teacher. The glasses in this senario give an impression of knowledge and wisdom, whereas the glasses previously mentioned would be big and thick rimmed to show youthfulness, the glasses worn by the teacher would be thin rimmed and smaller. By having smaller glasses the audience relates them with an older character because that style of glasses was popular in previous generations, and due to sight deterioration glasses become a necessary part of life, although the glasses do still keep an essence of intellegence, as a teacher, in their proffesion, is expected to be relatively interllectual.
Tie :- Only one character wears a tie in our film opening and that is the teacher. The tie is worn in order to show a state of proffesion. In the work place people are expected to be accordingly presentable as a social expectation. So in our film opening the teacher is wearing a tie to show his proffesionalism above the students in the classroom and his age, where presentation is an important factor of who they are. Although a tie has no meaning what so ever, in many cultures it is considered a respectable attibute of a working man.

Script

Coming up with the script was relatively difficult due to the fact we had to consider each and every character and how they would speak in a social situation but it wasn't too long before we came up with the final script.

This was the final decision for our script which includes all the dialogue for the film opening:

Script

Finn : (casual talking about school) So Zac... You know that girl up in I.C.T.? You know the one with the pigtails and the glasses?

Zac : Who..? Penny..?

Finn : Yeah...(sigh) Penny...

Zac : (Silence)...What about her?

Finn : She's nice...like really nice.

Zac : ...Wait...Are you trying to say you like her?

Finn : Whoa, no no no, (nervous laugh), well..... m..maybe?

Zac : (Laughs) You're joking right? She's so..... nerdy

Finn : A cute nerdy though.... right?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Penny : Mia...Mia!! Wait up...

Mia : (stops and turns) Penny? You're not usually late?

Penny : Yeah i know, I slept in...Do i look okay?

Mia : Well...You look like...Penny (smiles)

Penny : Well i wanted to look good for I.C.T. today.

Mia : Whys that? You've never really cared about what you look like? Is it a guy? (eyes widen)

Penny : (guilty smile)

Mia : Oh my God! It is! What's his name? What does he look like? Does he have dreamy eyes? Oh i bet he does! Does he know you like him? Does he like you? Do you have his number? You should totally get his number..! You should..

Penny : Mia! Calm down...He's just you know...A guy...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Zac : You know if you 'like' her, you should really make a move you know...

Finn : I dunno... I don't think she like...likes me like that?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mia : You should ask him out..! I'll help if you want...I'll drop hints and say...

Penny : I just don't think it's appropriate

Mia/Zac : You'll never know until you ask...(Bell rings)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Penny walks in late)

Penny : I..I'm sorry I'm late sir...

Teacher : (sigh) Thats okay Penny...Please take a seat.

(Penny sits. Teacher starts teaching. Penny and Finn make eye contact.)

Finn : (In head whilst looking at penny...'You should really make a move you know')

Penny : (In head...'You'll never know until you ask.')

Finn : ...ermm...Penny...

Penny : Sir..! (Gets up, walks towards him, climbs over desk, pulls him towards her by tie, kisses.)

Teacher : (Grabs Penny, I've always loved you Penny...I've always dreamed of moving in together with you... Let's run away together...What do you say Penny? Penny?

(Penny 'wakes up')

Teacher : Penny?

Penny : Oh..erm..yes sir...

(Teacher sighs)

Finn : So what do you say Penny?

Penny : (Turns head to Finn) Hmm?

Finn : (Pause) Will you go out with me?

(Penny wide eyes.)

Mind Mapping

Next it was time to decide on the story line. So me and Stevanie sat down and had a good old mind mapping session. We agreed that our story should have a twist like a lot of other romantic comedies, and it should check all the boxes of a cliché opening yet have it's own original storyline that maybe wasn't expected.

Our final story line idea was:

The film will start with the main character (Unpopular Girl) waking up and getting on with her morning routine to show the titles then it will cut to the Unpopular girl and her friend walking down the road talking about school and a 'guy' then the camera will cut to a scene of the (Unpopular boy) and his friend talking about the Unpopular Girl. (The idea is to make the audience think the two groups of friends are talking about each other but in fact the unpopular girl is talking about her teacher who she has a crush on.) Then the camera goes to the classroom scene where the unpopular girl has a short daydream about herself and her teacher. When she 'wakes up' she is shocked to realise that it wasn't the teacher talking to her but instead it was the unpopular boy asking her out.
